A 55-year-old man pleaded no contest today for trying to kidnap a 13-year-old girl walking to school in Rancho Palos Verdes, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Lindsay Kurtis said Garrett Evans Webber of Rancho Palos Verdes entered the plea to one felony count of attempted kidnapping of a victim under age 14 and admitted that he personally used a semi-automatic firearm.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 20 in Department C of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch. Webber faces 14 years in state prison.

On Oct. 30, 2017, Webber drove up to the victim as she walked in the 28700 block of Highridge Road, exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at her head trying to force her into his vehicle, the prosecutor said. The young victim was able to escape the defendant’s grasp and call for help from nearby good Samaritans, the prosecutor added.

A good Samaritan was able to get the defendant’s license plate and Webber was later located by police, the prosecutor said.

Case YA097132 was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lomita Station.
