An Oklahoma man was charged today with killing a mother and her young daughter outside their home in Long Beach three months ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Brandon Ivan Colbert Jr. (dob 4/26/94) was charged in case NA105286 with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder as well as special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and multiple murders. Colbert is expected to be arraigned today in Department S01 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes of the Major Crimes Division is prosecuting the case.

On Aug. 6, Carina Mancera, 26, was returning home at about 10:20 p.m. with her 4-year-old daughter, Jennabel Anaya, and the girl’s father, Luis Anaya. Colbert is accused of hiding behind a sign and opening fire on the family with a shotgun.

The girl and her mother were fatally shot. Colbert also fired at Anaya who was not wounded.

If convicted as charged, Colbert faces the death penalty or life in state prison without the possibility of parole. The decision whether to seek capital punishment will be made at a later date.

The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.
