A motorist is scheduled to be arraigned today after being ordered to stand trial for killing a motorcyclist in Gardena more than a year ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Ryan Gould said Oscar Villa (dob 3/7/93) of Hawthorne was held to answer on Jan. 16 for one count of murder in case YA097427.

Arraignment is scheduled today in Department F of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

On Dec. 21, 2017, Villa was driving near Western Avenue and Gardena Boulevard when he got into an altercation with Jaylen Ramon Bell Maxwell, 22, who was on a motorcycle, according to testimony at the preliminary hearing. When Maxwell drove away, the defendant reportedly followed him and ran over the motorcycle before crashing into a building, the prosecutor said.

The victim died as a result of his injuries.

Villa faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

The case remains under investigation by the Gardena Police Department.
