A 27-year-old man convicted of meeting two women at a cafe and then raping them at his home was sentenced today to 30 years to life in state prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On Aug. 27, Andrew Van Bui (dob 8/4/87) of Monterey Park was convicted by a jury of three counts of sexual penetration by foreign project, two counts of forcible rape and one count each of forcible oral copulation and rape by use of drugs in case GA090862.

At today’s sentencing, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Cathryn F. Brougham also ordered Bui to register as a sex offender for life.

Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Chavez, who prosecuted the case, said in August 2013, while working at a café, Bui met a 26-year-old woman. The two socialized with each other and eventually went to Bui’s home. While there, Bui drugged the woman and then raped her, the prosecutor said.

A week later, Bui met the second victim, a 22-year-old woman, at the same café and invited her to his home. While there, Bui attempted to drug the woman, and then sexually assaulted her, the prosecutor said.

Soon after the incident, the second victim contacted police and Bui was arrested.

The case was investigated by the Monterey Park Police Department.
