A 24-year-old man was sentenced today to 30 years to life in state prison after he was convicted of killing his girlfriend and their unborn son in 2013, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On Feb. 20, a jury found Devion Keith Anderson of Compton guilty of two counts of second-degree murder in case TA131363.

Deputy District Attorney Adrian Roxas, who prosecuted the case, said on the evening of Dec. 23, 2013, deputies received a 911 call from a family member at Anderson’s home.

Authorities were told the defendant may have killed and buried his 18-year-old girlfriend, Maria Gonzalez, the prosecutor said.

When deputies arrived, they discovered freshly dug dirt in the backyard. After excavating the area, authorities found the girlfriend’s body, the prosecutor added.

A few hours later, Anderson surrendered at the Compton sheriff’s station.

The prosecutor said that during Gonzalez’s autopsy, authorities determined the victim died by strangulation and she was 14 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
