A 51-year-old man was sentenced today to 12 years in state prison for a fatal fight nearly two years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’ Office announced.

At today’s court appearance, Enrique Pina Carrillo pleaded no contest to one felony count of voluntary manslaughter in case NA102428. The defendant also admitted a special allegation that he personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a glass bottle, during the commission of the crime.

Deputy District Attorney Tapti Patel, who prosecuted the case, said at the time of the incident Carrillo and victim Junior Jimenez, 22, were acquaintances.

On the evening of Aug. 15, 2015, Carrillo spilled a bottle of alcohol owned by Jimenez, the prosecutor said. Jimenez told Carrillo that he owed him more alcohol, which the defendant disputed, according to the prosecutor.

At that point, Carrillo picked up the bottle and broke it over Jimenez’s head, the prosecutor said. The two men continued to fight on the ground and on top of the glass shards from the broken bottle, the prosecutor added.

Authorities were called and Jimenez was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries, according to the prosecutor.

Four days later, police located Carrillo and arrested him in connection with the fatal attack.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
