A Gardena man pleaded no contest today for driving under the influence of alcohol, crashing into and killing a toddler, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Kronstadt said George Edward Milton Jr., 33, entered his plea to one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Milton was immediately sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

On May 20, a woman was walking with her 3-year-old son on the sidewalk near 92nd and Figueroa streets in Los Angeles when Milton lost control of his vehicle, drove up on the sidewalk and struck the child, the prosecutor said.

The defendant’s car then crashed into a nearby gate, he put his car in reverse, and ran over the toddler again, the prosecutor said.

Milton tried to flee the area, however, good Samaritans stopped him. Police were called to the scene and arrested the defendant in connection with the crash.

The child was taken to the hospital for medical treatment where he was pronounced dead.

Case TA146116 was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.
