A man was sentenced today to six years in state prison for assaulting three men outside an El Segundo restaurant in 2016, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Jurors last month found Joseph William Rooney (dob 10/22/83) guilty of two counts of assault with a firearm. The panel also found true allegations that Rooney personally used a firearm.

Deputy District Attorney Oscar Plascencia of the Justice System Integrity Division prosecuted the case.

On May 22, 2016, three men had just left a bar in the 100 block of Main Street in El Segundo and were standing outside a nearby restaurant when Rooney approached them.

Rooney, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer at the time of the incident, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the victims. He struck the victim in the face with the gun and then pointed the weapon at the two other men, the prosecutor said.

Case BA461162 was investigated by the El Segundo Police Department.
