A man entered a no contest plea today after a 4-year-old boy grabbed the man’s shotgun and then shot the child’s mother, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Brandon Gilbert Ambriz, 24, of Norwalk pleaded to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon in case VA149769.

Deputy District Attorney Chad Gillette said Ambriz was immediately sentenced to five years in state prison.

The defendant left the shotgun in a vehicle in which children were regularly driven, the prosecutor said. On Jan. 23, the 4-year-old shot his mother while she was in the driver’s seat and the boy was in the backseat. Three other children in the vehicle were not injured, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Norwalk Station.
