A man pleaded no contest today for fatally shooting his wife in front of their family on Christmas Day two years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Santiago Palacios Salgado, 58, entered the plea to one count of second-degree murder with an allegation that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm.

Deputy District Attorney Amanda Luna said sentencing is scheduled on Oct. 3 in Department N of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Norwalk Branch. Salgado faces 40 years to life in state prison.

On Dec. 25, 2017, Salgado went to a home in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue in Bellflower, displayed a handgun and fatally shot his estranged wife, Gabriela Romo-Garcia, 41.

Soon after the shooting, authorities arrived and Salgado was taken into custody, the prosecutor said.

Case VA146582 was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
