A 23-year-old man was convicted today of driving under the influence of alcohol, crashing into a car and trying to flee the scene, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

At today’s court appearance, Raymond Simon Alvarado of San Bernardino pleaded no contest to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in case KA108653.

Additionally, the defendant admitted special allegations that he fled the scene of the crime, committed a DUI causing injury and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of the crime.

Alvarado is scheduled to be sentenced July 28 in Department N of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pomona Branch. He is expected to be sentenced to 17 years in state prison.

Prosecutors said in the evening of Dec. 30, 2014, Alvarado was driving under the influence of alcohol in West Covina. The defendant ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle and seriously injured its two passengers.

Following the collision, Alvarado ran from the scene, but was ultimately apprehended by police and arrested in connection with the crash.

On Jan. 8, 2015, one of the injured passengers, a 31-year-old woman, died as a result of her injuries from the crash.

The case was investigated by the West Covina Police Department.
