November 12, 2019: Man Charged in Long Beach DUI Crash That Killed Family of Three

A 20-year-old man was charged today with killing a family of three in a DUI crash on Halloween in Long Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Carlo Adrian Navarro (dob 4/15/99) of Long Beach was charged in case NA113232 with three counts each of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The charges include an allegation of causing death to multiple victims.

Arraignment was continued today until 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Department S01 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

On Oct. 31, Navarro is accused of driving while intoxicated and crashing his vehicle into a family that was walking home from trick-or-treating at Country Club Drive and Los Cerritos Park Place.

Joseph Awaida, 30, died that night at a local hospital. His wife, 32-year-old Raihan Faisal Dakhil Awaida, and their 3-year-old son Omar were critically injured.

The child died on Nov. 2 and his mother died the next day as a result of their injuries from the crash.

The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Prosecutors are requesting that he be held on no bail.

The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.
