A Norwalk man was charged today in the hit-and-run death of an Australian man in Hollywood earlier this year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Kristopher Ryan Smith (dob 6/17/99) was charged in case BA479208 with one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury to another person and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

He is expected to be arraigned today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

In the early morning of April 18, the defendant allegedly hit 56-year-old Andrew Mallard with his vehicle as the victim was walking across Sunset Boulevard at Formosa Avenue, said Deputy District Attorney Rose DeMattia. The defendant is accused of then fleeing in his car.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith faces a possible maximum sentence of four years in state prison if convicted as charged. The prosecutor is recommending that bail be set at $50,000.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, West Traffic Division.
