A man was charged today with killing a 74-year-old woman in a hit-and-run crash last month in East Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Raul Juarez Carranza (dob 3/28/41) of East Los Angeles pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of hit-and-run driving resulting in death to another person and vehicular manslaughter in case BA474140.

A preliminary hearing setting is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Department 34 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Carranza remained out of custody on $50,000 bail.

On the morning of Dec. 8, Carranza allegedly was making a turn in a pickup truck when he hit a pedestrian who was crossing the street at Whittier Boulevard and Williamson Avenue, prosecutors said. The victim, identified as Maty Sanchez in the criminal complaint and a resident of the neighborhood, died from her injuries.

Carranza is accused of fleeing the scene.

He faces a possible maximum sentence of seven years in state prison if convicted as charged.

The case remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, East Los Angeles Station.
