Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that a 26-year-old man was charged today in a crash that killed a man in a wheelchair crossing a street in Long Beach.

“Driving under the influence is a potentially deadly decision with severe consequences,” District Attorney Gascón said.

Joseph Maez (dob 10/27/94) of Long Beach was charged in case NA117402 with one felony count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and driving with a .08 percent blood-alcohol content causing injury. Arraignment is set for July 2 in Department 1 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

On June 12, Maez allegedly struck a 59-year-old man in a wheelchair pushing a cart full of his belongings across Stearns Street at Radnor Avenue in the Los Altos neighborhood. The victim died at the scene.

The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.
