Prosecutors today filed criminal charges against a 35-year-old man accused of attempting to kidnap two girls in Compton, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Jodi Link of the Compton Branch Office said Ashley Luther Price (dob 06/08/78) of Los Angeles is charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping to commit rape and one count of unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle in case TA130337.

The defendant is expected to be arraigned this afternoon in Department 12 of Los Angeles County Superior Court, Compton Branch. The complaint includes a prior conviction for carjacking in 2008.

Price allegedly took an acquaintance’s car and used the vehicle to commit the crimes. The defendant is accused of attempting to kidnap the victims on the morning of Oct. 1 as the girls walked to school in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Compton Boulevard in Compton.

The alleged attempted kidnappings occurred within 15 minutes of each other, prosecutors said.

The defendant allegedly grabbed the first victim, a 14-year-old girl, and attempted to drag her towards his car. A good Samaritan stopped the alleged abduction by helping the victim escape the defendant’s grasp.

Price allegedly approached the second victim, a 15-year-old girl, about two miles from where the initial attempted kidnapping occurred. The girl managed to get away from the suspect and ran home, prosecutors said.

If convicted as charged, Price faces a maximum state prison sentence of 27 years. Prosecutors have recommended that his bail be set at $2.1 million.

Deputy District Attorney Bradley Roberts is assigned to the case. The matter remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
