A Los Angeles man was charged today with assaulting his 73-year-old mother and resisting arrest earlier this week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Antonio Ramirez (dob 4/21/74) was charged in case BA479944 with one count each of elder abuse, resisting executive officer and carrying a dirk or dagger, all felonies. He is expected to be arraigned today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Deputy District Attorney Deann Rivard of the Justice System Integrity Division is prosecuting the case.

On July 29, Ramirez, an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, allegedly attacked his elderly mother at the family home in East Los Angeles. She fell to the ground and suffered visible injuries.

When a sheriff’s deputy arrived, Ramirez is accused of forcibly resisting arrest. He also allegedly was carrying a dagger.

Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $75,000. If convicted as charged, Ramirez faces a possible maximum sentence of five years and four months in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau.
