A 36-year-old man is scheduled to be arraigned today on one count each of murder and carjacking in a parking garage, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Mitchell Ray Castillo (dob 9/16/81) of Los Angeles is expected to appear in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Prosecutors said Castillo encountered victim Ricardo Mota on Dec. 11 in a parking garage near MacArthur Park, where the victim was killed following a physical confrontation. The defendant allegedly got into Mota’s pickup truck and drove away.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Traffic Division, spotted Castillo in the stolen truck and arrested him within hours of the incident.

The District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Castillo on Dec. 13 in case BA463608.

The criminal complaint includes allegations of five prior convictions out of Los Angeles County, among them burglary in 2013 and felony criminal threats in 2017.

Castillo faces 75 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Prosecutors recommended setting bail at more than $3.1 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, Rampart Division.
