A Lancaster man was charged today with killing a man who was riding his all-terrain vehicle in the desert, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney John Evans said Arturo López (dob 7/16/75) is charged in case MA062878 with one count of murder with an allegation that he personally and intentionally used a rifle to commit the crime.

Additionally, the defendant faces three counts each of possession of a firearm by a felon with one prior. The prior named in the complaint is a 1997 conviction for unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle.

López is scheduled to be arraigned on May 8 at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Antelope Valley Branch in Department A01. Bail has been set at more than $2 million.

On Feb. 24, Steven Finson, 47, was returning home from riding an ATV and taking pictures in the desert near East Avenue H when he was shot to death by López, Deputy District Attorney Evans said.

If convicted as charged, López faces 25 years to life in state prison.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lancaster Station.
