November 13, 2017: Hawthorne Woman Charged For Pursuit in U-Haul Truck

A 35-year-old woman was charged today with leading police on a pursuit in a stolen U-Haul truck and slamming into a patrol car, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Shante Johnson (dob 12/18/81)of Hawthorne faces two felony counts of assault upon a peace officer and one felony count each of fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly and driving or taking a vehicle without consent.

Case BA462758 also charges Johnson with three misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage and includes an allegation that she was convicted of petty theft in 2014.

Arraignment is scheduled tomorrow in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

The defendant was allegedly spotted by police on Nov. 9 driving a stolen truck near 61st Street and Broadway Avenue and a pursuit began, prosecutors said. Johnson is charged with committing three hit and runs during the pursuit which ended shortly after she allegedly rammed a patrol car, prosecutors added.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 10 years in state prison. Bail is requested at $195,000.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
