A 21-year-old man has been ordered to stand trial on a vehicular manslaughter charge for a New Year’s Day crash in which a Lyft driver was killed, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Arturo Martinez Conchas (dob 10/23/94), of Hawthorne, pleaded not guilty today to one felony count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing death and driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury.

Case SA091955 includes an additional misdemeanor count of possessing a controlled substance, MDMA.

Conchas was held to answer to the charges on Sept. 15 and is due back in court on Oct. 26 in Department W81 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Airport Branch.

On Jan. 1, victim Thor Anderson, 21, was making a U-Turn near 182nd Street and Doty Avenue in Torrance when the defendant allegedly broadsided him, prosecutors said. Anderson died as a result of his injuries, prosecutors added.

Bail for Martinez is set at $130,000.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Hawthorne Police Department.
