A 29-year-old man has been charged with breaking into his 57-year-old mother’s Gardena home and stabbing her to death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Deputy District Attorney Maren Dermody said Nicholas Hyunoh Kim (dob 5/15/85) of Gardena faces one count of murder with the special circumstance allegation that it occurred during the commission of a burglary.

Case YA092316 was filed yesterday and Kim pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is due back on May 5 in Department 3 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

Sohyun Kim was allegedly stabbed several times by her son after he broke into her apartment, the prosecutor said.

The defendant faces the death penalty or life in state prison without the possibility of parole if convicted as charged. The decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date.

The case remains under investigation by the Gardena Police Department.
