A 30-year-old gang member was found guilty today of killing a man as he stood outside of a Redondo Beach home, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Turk said Erick Julian Ortega was convicted of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

After three hours of deliberation, the jury also found true allegations that Ortega committed the crimes in association with a criminal street gang, used a handgun and was convicted in 2005 for making criminal threats and in 2007 for possession for sale of cocaine.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 3 in Department G of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch. The defendant faces 50 years to life in state prison.

On June 21, 2013, Ortega fatally shot Bobby Reynolds, 38, and then fled the state, the prosecutor said.

Case YA087978 was filed for warrant on July 25, 2013, and the defendant was arrested in Utah months later. Among the evidence presented at the trial were lyrics to a song containing specific similarities to the murder.

The case was investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department.
