A Fresno couple charged with killing their one-month-old son in a Long Beach hotel pleaded not guilty today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Amy Wilton said Joshua Licon (dob 11/8/85) and Nereyda Licon (dob 2/17/82) are each charged with one count of murder in case NA098693.

Joshua Licon also pleaded not guilty to one misdemeanor count of disobeying a court imposed restraining order.

On May 30, 2013, emergency personnel responding to a hotel room on the 200 block of South Pine Avenue in Long Beach found the baby unresponsive, according to the prosecutor.

The infant – identified in the complaint as Joshua L. Jr. – had been significantly undernourished which contributed to his death, Deputy District Attorney Wilton added. After an almost year-long investigation the parents were arrested in Fresno.

If convicted Joshua Licon faces a maximum possible sentence of 16-years-to-life in state prison, and Nereyda Licon faces a 15-years-to-life sentence.

The defendants are being held on $1-million bail. They are both due back for a preliminary hearing on May 12 in Department S17 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
