A convicted double murderer was sentenced today to life in state prison for the 1972 bludgeoning death of a 79-year-old woman in her apartment, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Harold Holman, 70, was serving a 45-year prison sentence for a double murder and a string of high-rise residential burglaries in the 1980s. On July 13, a jury found him guilty of the first-degree murder of Helen Meyler.

Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman with the Major Crimes Division said DNA evidence connected Holman, who robbed and sexually assaulted the victim, to the Aug. 27, 1972 murder.

The Los Angeles Police Department investigated the case BA432938.
