A 26-year-old man was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison for driving under the influence of alcohol and killing another driver on the freeway, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On June 3, Tyler Thompson of Duarte pleaded no contest to three counts in case KA107009: second-degree murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense and leaving the scene of an accident.

The defendant also admitted a special allegation that he was previously convicted of driving a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more in 2011.

Deputy District Attorney Vanessa Robles, who prosecuted the case, said in the early morning of Aug. 9, 2014, Thompson was driving on the wrong side of the 210 Freeway while under the influence of alcohol. While driving, Thompson crashed into another vehicle, killing the driver, Justin Romo, 19, and seriously injuring the passenger.

Following the crash, the defendant fled the scene on foot, but was soon arrested by authorities, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the California Highway Patrol, Baldwin Park.
