A Compton man pleaded no contest today to voluntary manslaughter for the death of his six-month old baby, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Emily Spear said David Gómez (dob 8/17/87) also admitted an allegation of causing great bodily injury on a child under five years old.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge John J. Cheroske of the Compton Branch immediately sentenced Gómez to 16 years in state prison.

While his wife was at work on Oct. 3, 2012, Gómez took care of their two-year-old child and the six month- old victim, the prosecutor said. When the baby wouldn’t stop crying, Gómez shook the child and slammed him on the floor, Deputy District Attorney Spear added.

The child died in the hospital soon after with a fractured skull.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Compton Station.
