A 45-year-old man was sentenced today to three years in state prison for inappropriately touching a boy in a restroom at the Puente Hills Mall, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On Aug. 15, Richard Matthew Camarena of Claremont pleaded no contest to a felony count of lewd act upon a child in case KA113089.

In addition to the prison sentence, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mike Camacho also ordered the defendant to register as a lifetime sex offender.

Deputy District Attorney Rose Carrion of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said on July 8 a nine-year-old boy visited a movie theater with his family in the City of Industry.

After watching the movie, the child went to the restroom in the mall. As the boy was in the locked stall, he saw the stall door wiggled open and Camarena entered, the prosecutor added.

The defendant then inappropriately touched the victim. The boy struggled with Camarena and the defendant left the restroom, the prosecutor said.

The victim immediately alerted his family about what occurred and they subsequently contacted law enforcement.

Camarena was identified and arrested in connection with the crime on July 23, according to the prosecutor.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
