A 19-year-old Baldwin Park man was charged today with three counts of capital murder in connection with last week’s arson fire at a South El Monte tire shop that killed three people, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Roberto Fuentes (dob 10/6/95) is scheduled to be arraigned sometime after 1:30 p.m. at the El Monte Branch of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Department 3, in case KA109588. Prosecutors will ask that he be held without bail.

Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney with the Arson and Explosives Unit of Target Crimes is prosecuting the case.

Fuentes allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail into a tire shop at 1252 N. Santa Anita Ave. shortly before 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Killed in the fire were Rodrigo Gonzalez, 17, Destiny Monique Aguirre, 18, and Christopher Jimenez, 17, all from South El Monte.

In addition to three counts of murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders, Fuentes is charged with one count of arson causing great bodily injury and one count of use of destructive device and explosive to injure.

The special circumstance makes Fuentes eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
