February 14, 2020: Alleged DUI Driver Charged in Accident that Cost Victim His Legs

A Los Angeles man has been charged with a DUI hit-and-run crash in the Fairfax District in which the 47-year-old victim lost both of his legs, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

John Michael Maese (dob 6/7/94) faces one felony count each of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury, driving with a .o8% blood alcohol content causing injury and hit-and-run driving resulting in injury to another person as well as one misdemeanor count of driving when privilege suspended or revoked for a driving under the influence conviction.

Deputy District Attorney Jacqueline Haidar said the charges include an allegation that Maese personally inflicted great bodily injury upon the victim.

Arraignment is scheduled today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Case BA484408 was filed for warrant on January 10.

The defendant allegedly struck the victim as he stood behind his parked car on the 7600 block of Beverly Boulevard on August 17, 2019, the prosecutor said. Maese reportedly fled the scene following the crash, the prosecutor added.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of more than seven years in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, West Traffic Division.
