John C. Donnell

John Alexander Donnell (1895-1899) was born in Indiana. Before arriving in Los Angeles in 1887, he was a successful lawyer in another adopted state, Iowa. Donnell had served in the Cavalry in the Civil War and was a popular figure in Iowa, serving as a county clerk, county attorney, and district attorney of the Sixth Judicial District. Donnell came to Los Angeles following his wife's death and was elected district attorney in 1894.
