August 9, 2019: Odometer Rollback Scam Takes Consumers for a Ride

People in the market for used vehicles should make sure they get what they pay for.

In the Odometer Rollback Scam, dishonest sellers lower the displayed mileage on used vehicles and then sell them at inflated prices.

Besides paying too much, victims also may encounter unexpected repairs and receive inaccurate car titles. There are safety risks, too, if the lowered mileage leads to lapses in a vehicle’s scheduled maintenance.

TIPS:

  • Compare the mileage to the title, vehicle history reports and maintenance records.
  • Request the seller to explicitly warranty the mileage.
  • Ask the dealership to run a mileage diagnostic.
