New vehicle owners beware: thieves might be more interested in your personal information than a cell phone, GPS device or designer sunglasses left in the car.

Newly purchased cars are targeted because their owners forget to take the sales or lease contract out of the glove compartment. The contract can be a bonanza for crooks because it contains the owner’s date of birth, Social Security number and other identifying information.

Thieves then use the data to create fake credit cards or loan applications.

TIPS:

  • Keep only what is needed such as the owner’s manual, registration and proof of insurance in the glove compartment
  • Lock the glove compartment
