Animal Cruelty Case Coordinator
Deputy
District Attorney Deborah Knaan supervises the prosecution of all
animal cruelty and neglect cases in the Los Angeles County District
Attorney’s Office. She also trains law enforcement officers and
prosecutors on how to properly investigate and successfully
prosecute these cases. A veteran trial attorney, Knaan has been
assigned to various units throughout her career, including the Sex
Crimes Division and the Hardcore Gang Unit, C.L.E.A.R. Task Force.
From 2004-2006, Knaan served as a member of the Los Angeles Department of Animal
Services’ Board of Commissioners, overseeing and setting policy for the city’s
six animal shelters. In 2006, Knaan became the Los Angeles Department of Animal
Services’ assistant general manager. In this position, Knaan oversaw the
day-to-day operations of the city’s animal shelters and supervised the
Department’s humane investigators. In July 2007, District Attorney Steve Cooley
appointed Knaan to become the first animal cruelty case coordinator in the
office’s history.
